Dan's Construction and Repair Blog

Hello! My name is Dan and this is my construction and repair blog. I don't work in the industry myself, I have recently used a lot of different contractors during the construction of my home. Construction contractors used machinery to dig and lay the foundations for my home before the walls and trusses where installed. A roofing company installed a metal roof and contractors installed plumbing and electrical utilities. I was very impressed with the results and I learnt lots of cool things during the completion of this project. This blog contains information which will be useful to other people who plan to work with construction contractors.

Definitive Homeowners Guide to Residential Demolition

Whether you are contemplating rebuilding your home, remodelling it or razing it to the ground, demolition is one of the construction processes that you could be considering. Nevertheless, the perception that most people have about demolition exclusively meaning blowing things up tends to be skewed. This type of project is not just about knocking a building down. The process has to be handled meticulously to ensure no subsequent damage arises post demolition. Secondly, there are multiple ways that you can take your house apart. Therefore, you need to discern what would be the best option for your specific requirements before you go ahead with hiring a demolition contractor. Read this definitive guide to the various kinds of residential demolition that you could opt for.

Manual residential demolition

With this form of residential demolition, the contractors will take our home apart manually. Thus, they will make use of tools such as saws and sledgehammers to cut and break away the areas of your home that you would like to get rid of. Manual demolition is especially ideal if you are embarking on minor renovations on your property that would require you to tear down a wall, perhaps install in larger windows and more. Therefore, it is only recommended for small-scale projects. It would also be suitable if you would like to protect the surrounding areas from structural damage.

Mechanical residential demolition

If you need a large part of your property demolished, you may want to consider mechanical methods. As per its name, mechanical demolition entails the use of heavy construction machinery such as bulldozers, heavy-duty excavators and even wrecking balls. Although mechanical demolition can be controlled to some degree, it should be noted that it is best performed on a site with sufficient space. Therefore, it may not be suitable if you live in an urban area with homes that are closely spaced together.

Deconstructed residential demolition

This form of residential is also known as hand demolition. However, it should not be confused with manual demolition. With a deconstruction, the process entails stripping the property of its building materials piece by piece. The primary purpose of choosing this form of demolition is to give you the chance to salvage building supplies, which you can either reuse in your new construction or sell them for profit. Deconstructed residential demolition is increasingly becoming a popular solution as you get the chance to salvage doors, windows, tiles, fixtures, plumbing pipes and so on. Take note that deconstructed demolition is the most expensive type you could choose due to how labour intensive it is.
